Car Permit

I had been looking for an economical car and the Suzuki Swift 'box' model (the one that looks like a small SUV from the back) was what caught my eye. Unfortunately, they introduced the new Swift (which has more of a 'gemba' shape) and that is the only one available brand new. Here are the offers they have for the permit:

Colt (Hatchback) EX 1500 Auto, Full Option $10900

The calculation of final Rs. value is as follows:
CIF $ Price * $ rate * 1.6 + (150k-200k) *1.15

NB:
(a) Though duty is 25%, all other taxes make it 60% (hence multiply by 1.6)
(b) Their handling charges vary from 150k to 200k on which 15% VAT is added

So, for example, the lowest end (2005) model goes for:
(7650 * 110 * 1.6) + (150,000 * 1.15) ~ Rs. 1.5m
and the lowest end 2007 model will come to:
(11550 * 110 * 1.6) + (200,000 * 1.15) ~ Rs. 2.26m

Conclusion

So, what you really need to know is how much is their own 'local' or 'handling' charge. They are all not sure exactly which taxes will apply, and whatever applies should apply to all equally. No one will also know exactly how much the $ rate will be at that time! As such, all we need to know is how much their own markup is...

In short, as long as they are willing to say how they calculate (which United Motors did), that's all we can go on.

As it appears now:

  • Cars upto 1.4L (25% tax) end up with ~47.5% added to CIF (with handling charge of 150k + VAT?)
  • Cars upto 1.6L (35% tax) end up with ~58.5% added to CIF (with handling charge of 200k + VAT?)

Just in case you were dissappointed expecting me to put my recommendation - here goes: let's all go and buy our own Bugatti Veyron[1]!
