Modelling & Simulation Group


The modeling and simulation group of UCSC was initially formed in 2008 to work on a Ship Handling Simulator (ViduSayura) for the Sri Lanka Navy. This was a collaborative research effort involving personnels from the UCSC, Department of Physics of the University of Colombo, and the Sri Lanka Navy. Currently, the modeling and simulation group of UCSC collaboratively carries out various research and development activities with national and international organizations. 

The success of this collaborative work is highlighted by the 30+ research papers published by the group and the numerous national and international awards. According to the UCSC cooperate plane 2011/12-2015/16, the modeling and simulation group of the UCSC responsible for the several activities to creating a collaborative research culture.

ICT based home-grown Vessel Traffic Monitoring solution for the Colombo Port

His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa formally declared open the newly-expanded Colombo South harbor of the Colombo Port including its new Control Tower/Pilot station, Colombo International Container Terminals Ltd (first stage)  for business on  5th August 2013.  It will allow Sri Lanka to regain its role as a leading South Asia trans-shipment hub. Vidusayura Ship Handling Simulator

The most effective solution for the ship handling training is the use of a ship simulator. Unfortunately, such simulators are extremely costly. To remedy this situation University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC)  started to develop  a ship handling simulator, named ViduSayura. The salient feature of ViduSayura is that is entirely developed using the Commodity Off the Shelf hardware and open source software. Therefore ViduSayura is extremely cost effective and it also frees the users from getting locked into a vendor specific proprietary solution.Currently, Vidusayura is funded by National research council Sri Lanka.
